West Mt. Airy Neighbors (WMAN) is a community-based non-profit (501Ⓒ3) civic association that is committed to preserving and enhancing the quality of life in our richly diverse urban neighborhood. Founded in 1958 to sustain West Mt. Airy as a racially integrated community, WMAN has continuously focused on making the community a welcoming place for all people. WMAN provides a forum for community problem solving and communications, encourages community engagement through events and activities, and facilitates neighbor input into proposed land use planning and community development.
Reporting to the President of the Board, the Executive Director works with residents and the WMAN Board of Directors to continue these strong traditions. This is a part-time 20-25 hour/week position.
- Represent WMAN at meetings and forums that address board and neighborhood priorities and issues.
- Initiate programs with the WMAN Board to significantly increase membership, including retaining existing members and sponsors, as well as instituting projects to attract new members and sponsors.
- Identify and act on opportunities for WMAN to apply for grant funding and identify and nurture prospective donors.
- Measurably improve and sustain awareness and visibility of WMAN and its neighborhood value through various communication channels, including the organization’s website, newsletters, and social media accounts.
- Strengthen existing, and cultivate new, relationships on behalf of WMAN with other organizations, city agencies, neighborhood school offices, elected officials, the 14th District Police Department, the general public, and the media. Work closely with all NW neighborhood organizations for the benefit of neighbors.
- Work with WMAN Board to prioritize, promote, and deliver quality programs and events to benefit the neighborhood and its residents.
- Foster increased volunteer participation in WMAN events, projects, and Committees.
- Manage day-to-day office operations, including neighbor requests for assistance, staffing of Board committees, and tracking of all ongoing income and expenses.
- Perform tasks in order of priority and provide reports, with minimum daily oversight.
- Perform other relevant duties as appropriate and required.
- Supervise a part-time administrator.
The ideal candidate is an energetic, passionate individual with non-profit executive leadership experience and demonstrated commitment to community engagement and organizing. Key qualifications include:
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Proficiency in MS Office; experience with social media platforms is desirable.
- Flexible scheduling with availability to attend up to 2 regularly scheduled evening community meetings and events per week (and occasionally on weekends).
- Reliable transportation.
- Executive leadership experience in a non-profit organization.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve issues quickly and make reasonable collaborative decisions.
