Welcome, Spring!

Crocuses are popping up, the clocks have sprung ahead, and the neighborhood is starting to look particularly lovely………….

Despite the many disruptions created by the record-setting snow, the EMAN dance party/fundraiser, “Saturday Night Fever in East Mt. Airy”, was a success --- and a perfect antidote to the cabin fever we’d all had for weeks.

Many thanks to our generous sponsors:

We hope you’ll support the businesses that support our community organization!

The downside of the snow finally melting is that driving on some of our streets is like driving on the moon --- craters/potholes can be reported to 311, and the information will be given to the Streets Department.

The U.S.Census is underway, and our participation is more important than ever. Philadelphia has been undercounted in the past, and many vital services are funded according to population, such as programs for seniors, early childhood education, emergency services, public works and job training. Apportioning seats in the U.S. House of Representatives is also based on Census data, and our numbers affect our representation.

You should receive a Census form this week. There are only 10 questions and the form takes only minutes to complete.

Potential scam warning: If you are visited by a Census worker, check for an ID badge, a hand-held device and a Census Bureau bag. You will not be asked for your social security number or any bank information. A Census worker will never ask for a donation. The Census Bureau does not send e-mails, so delete any that claim to be Census-related immediately. More information is available atwww.census.gov

Planning for Mt. Airy Day (May 1st) is in high gear, and help is needed! This is the 40th year for our big community festival, and there’s lots to do. We are looking for volunteers to help with a variety of tasks. You don’t have to commit to staying all day --- we’d love to have your help for even a few hours! Students seeking community service hours are welcome. Contact the committee at mtairyday@aol.com  for more information.

Plans for a weekly farmers market at William Allen Plaza (Lutheran Theological Seminary) are moving along. Tuesday is the best day for both the farmers and those who filled out the survey. Look for updates as they become available.

This project is co-sponsored by the Seminary and Valley Green Bank --- 2 organizations that are deeply committed to Mt. Airy. Folks at both institutions have been working hard to make this happen; special acknowledgement should go to Lesley Seitchik, whose boundless energy is moving things along.

Enjoy the sunshine!
