Greetings from East Mt. Airy Neighbors!

It's Spring, bringing warmer weather & an important primary election tomorrow. Lots of us have been inundated with phone calls & flyers seeking support, which is irritating. But it's an important election, with both the Mayor's office & City Council positions on the line, as well as many judicial seats. These are positions that affect our lives every day.Over 100 people attended our mayoral forum, & 4 of the candidates were there to answer questions. Tamala Edwards(6ABC/WPVI) moderated, & we deeply appreciate her community-mindedness.            Voter turnout for primaries is traditionally low......Let's start a new tradition! Even though our neighborhood has higher turnout than most, we can do better. Elected officials will listen if we show up to vote. Polling places are open tomorrow from 7AM till 8PM. If you have questions about voting, the 4 ballot questions, or any of the candidates, the nonpartisan Committee of Seventy can help. Call 1-855-SEVENTY (1-855-738-3689), or visit their website ( The website has basic info about all of the candidates for all of the offices, including links to the candidates' websites.

Spring also means it's time for EMAN's Annual Meeting/Elections.This year's meeting will be on June 3rd, from 7:00 - 9:00 PM, in Hagan Amphitheater on the campus of the Lutheran Theological Seminary(7301 Germantown Ave.). The community is invited. Following a short regular business meeting, you will meet 5 community members standing for election to EMAN's Board of Directors. Our special presentation this year will focus on 2 important programs we work on in partnership with Mt. Airy USA (MAUSA) & WMAN --- The Mt. Airy Schools Coalition (MASC)  & the new Wells Fargo Neighborhood Planning Grant that MAUSA was awarded. Both of these have a big --- & positive --- impact on the neighborhood. You may have heard about the MASC & some of our accomplishments in our local public elementary schools. Abby Thaker, Director of Development & Education Partnerships for MAUSA & the dynamo behind the work of the Schools Coalition, will give us background & updates on current projects. Tammy Thomas, Principal of Emlen Elementary School, will be on hand to describe the effects of the MASC on her school. The Wells Fargo grant will allow MAUSA to develop a neighborhood plan, after studying the needs of the area in consultation with community organizations, local businesses, & residents. It's not confined to the business corridor, & much of the area being examined is in East Mt. Airy's southern half. There will be opportunities for community involvement & volunteers will be needed; come hear about it & think about getting involved.

Many thanks to everyone who volunteered & helped make Mt. Airy Day a success! The weather was beautiful & neighbors were out in droves, enjoying the entertainment, the vendors, the food court & the new "Rock-n-Roll Raceway". Of course, the event, which costs thousands of dollars to produce, would not have happened without the generous support of our sponsors. We urge you to support the businesses & organizations that supported Mt. Airy Day!

Heating bills may be behind us for a while, but we'll want to cool our homes during the Summer months, & utility costs are high. The PGW EnergySense Home Rebates Program is being offered again this year, & you might want to check it out. It can help identify areas of your home where energy is being wasted. You can sign up for a home energy assessment, which costs $150 (valued at $500 regularly). After the assessment, you may be eligible for a cash rebate on recommended repairs & updates. Call 1-855-PGW-SOLVES or visit for details.

GSK's free "Science in the Summer" Program will be back this year! This hands-on program is designed for students who will be entering grades K - 6 in the Fall. This is a fun way to get kids interested in science, technology & math. There are two 2-hour sessions at each location. The closest locations to us are Wadsworth Library (June 25th & 26th) & Coleman NW Regional Library (July 11th & 18th). While the program is free, you must register, & registration's open now. Go to to see the schedules & register your child.

We'd like to say a few words about Anuj Gupta, Executive Director of Mt. Airy USA (MAUSA). In case you haven't heard, Anuj is leaving his position at MAUSA at the end of the month to become the new General Manager of the Reading Terminal Market. Under Anuj's leadership, MAUSA's finances stabilized & grew, blighted properties were redeveloped, buildings on the Avenue received facade improvements, Street Fare became a highly-anticipated & successful annual event--- in short, Anuj provided leadership for the revitalization of much of the Avenue. We at EMAN were particularly happy that Anuj believes in the power of community partnerships. The Schools Coalition is a great example of the achievements that can result from working together. During the upcoming transition, MAUSA's day-to-day operations will be in the extremely capable hands of Abby Thaker & Brad Copeland, 2 people with whom we've always enjoyed working. We wish Anuj well in his new position, & we know he'll be an asset to Reading Terminal Market!

EMAN exists to "make a good community better", & we hope you'll join us in that process! Please come to the Annual Meeting on June 3rd, meet the Board members, hear about what we've been doing over the past year --- & become a member, if you aren't already. You can join anytime at our website (, using PayPal.
